2010 FFF Southern Council NominationFly Tyer of the YearJohn WaltherI would like to nominate Mr. John Walther for the Fly Tyer of the Year Award. I doubt that John realizes his great contribution to the art of fly tying in our area and throughout the Southern Council. He is a highly competent and skilled man behind the vice. What stands out most however, is his willingness and patience to teach the art of fly tying to others within our club and community. John started and organized the winter fly tying program for our club. This program has increased our membership and has introduced hundreds of people to the art through his effort. He works tirelessly picking the patterns and putting together the materials needed. John found the proper camera and constructed a mounting system for it to be used during these classes. John has also pioneered the Tying with the Vets program at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Administration Hospital. John has also taken the lead with teaching fly tying to the at risk teen group at the local high school. Although much of his work is behind the scenes; I would hate to see his effort go unrecognized. John has traveled throughout the area to teach fly tying and to show his many patterns to other clubs and organizations. He has been a demo tyer at several conclaves and expositions. John is a tireless promoter of the sport and is always the first to volunteer his expertise where needed. Without ignoring the contributions of the other nominees, I advocate John Walther for his outstanding contributions. I believe he best exemplifies what the Southern Council is looking for in the award of Fly Tyer of the Year. Fly Fishers Jeff Trigg, President |
