2010 FFF Southern Council NominationFly Tyer of the YearStephen MainStephen Main is Green Country Flyfishers nominee for the Southern Council’s Junior Fly Tier of the Year award for 2010. He is a Junior at Independence, KS High School and has been tying flies since he was eleven years old. The members of Green Country Flyfishers (GCF) met Stephen about two years ago, which we started the “Coffee and Tying” program in Dearing, KS. It was clear Stephen was a gifted fly tier with great thread control. When asked where he had learned to tie flies he said from television and books. When he was eleven he saw a fly tying demonstration on television and thought it was cool and just started tying. About a year later his parents bought him his first tying book, which he used as a source for patterns. Stephen became interested in tying realistic insects and without a mentor he developed his own techniques for tying a number of realistic insects. Since he did not have access to a fly shop, he got his materials by mail order or just using what was around the house. Since the members of GCF met Stephen, He has tied at the Smallmouth Rendezvous twice and has tied at both the Sowbug and SOC Conclave, where other tiers have been impressed with Stephen’s skills as a tier. Stephen has been invited back to all three events. That a young man could become an advanced tier without a mentor is impressive, and how fast he has improved with access to the great tiers of the SOC is truly impressive. The Green Country Flyfishers are proud to nominate Stephen Main for the Southern Council’s 2010 Junior Fly Tier of the Year award. Dennis Kidd |
