2010 FFF Southern Council Nomination

Man of the Year

Wm. Howard Malpass

I was looking at the Southern Council website & see where nominations are being received for the various catagories. I usually don't give this much attention but I would like to nominate Howard Malpass for Man of the Year Award. I first met Howard a couple of years ago when he had been elected as VP of Development. He made a presentation to our club ( Lone Star Fly Fishers in Tyler) & expressed his concern that clubs & the individuals in those clubs have a direct line of communication with the Southern Council. Since then he has followed up & kept us apprised of the ways he is acheiving this goal. He has recently been instrumental in organizing a tri-club conclave between the Shreveport, Longview & Tyler clubs to promote fly fishing in our area. He had a booth where he spent the entire day promoting the FFF. He exemplifies a passion for the sport of fly fishing & a genuine concern for teaching the next generation of fly fishers.

Howard is truly dedicated to the Southern Council & to making a difference in the quality of service it renders to the individual. Through his efforts he has bridged the gap between the Council & the individual fly fisher. If anyone in our area has a question or needs assistance in any way we know we can count on Howard for help.

On behalf of the Lone Star Fly Fishers it is my pleasure to nominate Howard Malpass for Man of the Year Award.

I am a board member of the North Louisiana Fly Fishers of Shreveport Louisiana and the Pro fly fishing expert at the Bass Pro Shop in Bossier City. I am writing to you nominating Mr. Howard Malpass as the Man of the Year that is presented annually to the individual who has demonstrated unusual devotion to the Southern Council and, through his devotion, has benefited the Southern Council, the FFF and/or his club.

Mr. Malpass is an exceptional individual and a man who deserves this award. He devotes himself to the world of fly fishing in all aspects of his life. He is constantly at every teaching demonstration that Bass Pro shop puts on. He is always teaching individuals about Rod Selections as well as how to catch and release fish unharmed. He is always promoting the Federation of Fly Fishers at all meetings and outings that he attends. I am also the new Program Lead for Project Healing Waters in the state of Louisiana. When I need volunteers I can always count on Mr. Malpass to be the first in line to help our vets. I have been a member of the FFF and the Southern Council now for three years. During this time Mr. Malpass has represented the North Louisiana Fly Fishers at all the ConClaves and has served on the Southern Council’s board during part of those three years. I am including some of his accomplishments below:

  • Working on the production of the 2010 Conclave and the various issues that are needed to make it to come together.
  • Provided a major correspondence aspect working with the various clubs of the Council with the Regional Directors of Development. This is a prime contact with the individual members and has come about by the development of the Regional Directors program under the Vice President of Development.
  • Actively worked with the National Office in the Development Committee for the F.F.F. and worked with other vice Presidents of various Councils all over the country to help the National Programs.
  • Assisted President Michael Ames in exploring the various programs we need to work on. To expand and make funding available in helping the Council survive and thrive in the growing difficult life time we are in.
  • Traveled to MANY of the individual Clubs to give speeches and answer questions regarding the importance of joining the FFF and have clubs become Charter Clubs of the FFF.
  • Worked with the Project Healing Waters Operation to establish and form a new chapter. The newest is now in the Overton Brooks, Veterans Administration Regional Hospital, Shreveport, Louisiana. This is the newest in the south and working with the people of the Veterans Hospital, War Veterans Home, U.S.A.F. Barksdale Air Force Base and Fort Polk, Louisiana.
  • Involved in many Fly Tying Exhibitions which he exhibited, talked and promoted the good aspects of Joining the F.F.F. At each time he provided books, handouts and coffee to sit and talk to others about the benefit of joining the FFF.
  • Has promoted the FFF — both Council and National — at every event worked to let people know about the benefits and signed up new members for the FFF.

If anyone deserves this award Mr. Howard Malpass is the Man of the Year.

Sincerely
David A. Owens
Program Lead, Project Healing Waters Shreveport.
