2007 FFF Southern Council NominationJunior Fly Tyer of the YearWill TravisI would like to nominate Will Travis of Dallas Flyfishers for the award of 2007 Southern Council Junior Fly Tyer of the Year. In 2005 I nominated Will and he won this award. I did not nominate him again in 2006 because I felt that another kid should have a chance. I was disappointed that there was no award last year apparently because no one was nominated. I'm sure that there are several good young fly tyers in our Council and it is a shame that there seems to be little interest in promoting and giving them recognition. I'll get off my soap box and bring you up to date on Will. Since winning the award Will has been a demonstration tyer at The Fly Fishing Show, Arlington, Texas in 2006 and 2007. In 2006 he was invited to tie at the Southern Council Conclave but school interfered. School once again kept him from tying at the inagural Gulf Coast Expo. Will has been invited, and will tie, at the FFF International Conclave this summer in Livingston. The USA Youth Fly Fishing Team has invited Will to a team try-out, which he will attend, later this month in State University, Pennslyvania. Wish him luck. Also, this summer Will is doing demonstration tying most Saturdays at Tailwaters Fly Fishing Co., Dallas' new full line fly shop. He will be the featured tyer June 20th at the Rockport Flyfishers tying roundtable. I'm probably leaving out a few things but these are the highlights. Besides being an excellent tyer, for any age, he is an avid fisherman and pretty good caster, even for a lefty. Will turns 15 this July. I certainly hope that Will again wins this award but I hope even more that he will have a lot of competition. Have a good summer and see you in October. Bill Sargeant |
