2007 FFF Southern Council NominationTeacher of the YearNorm CrispIt is my pleasure to nominate Norm Crisp as the Federation of Fly Fishers Southern Council Teacher of the Year. Norm is serving as the Education Chair for the Heart of America Fly Fishers. Norm has a BS in Biology and an MS in Fisheries Biology, additionally he has an MS in Water Resources Engineering. Norm was a Senior Water Scientist for the EPA prior to retiring in 2004, service which took him as far as Russian and Ukraine. Since retirement, Norm has combined his educational background and extensive experience as a Water Scientist with his boundless enthusiasm for fly fishing to become a professional instructor and guide. Norm owns Stream Side Adventures, a fly fishing guiding and outfitting company licensed in Missouri and Wyoming. Norm teaches the following classes at Johnson County (Kansas) Community College Continuing Education Division: Introduction to Fly Fishing (over 200 students to date); Introduction to Fly Tying (over 80 students to date); Intermediate Fly Fishing (over 60 students to date); Fly Fishing the Missouri Trout Parks (over 50 students to date). Norm has generously given of his knowledge and time to clubs and individuals; he’s developed several programs: Traveling and Trout Fishing, Fishing Midges, Fly Fishing Strategies and a very unique one based on his background as a Water Scientist: Fluid Mechanics for Fly Fisherman. He’s given his programs to FFF and TU Chapters from Texas to Kentucky, New Hampshire and Great Britain. Since becoming Education Chair for the Heart of America Fly Fishers Norm has used his talents and programs generously and at no cost to help our members improve their knowledge and to outreach to new members. He has given his free programs at the Missouri Department of Conservation Discovery Center, resulting in several new members, at our club meetings, at other Southern Council club meetings and has assisted in several “outreach” programs; notably Women in the Outdoors, sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and most recently, in March 2007, Norm coordinated the efforts of Metro Kansas City area FFF clubs in presenting a seminar-series at Cabelas in Kansas City Kansas promoting the FFF. In addition to coordinating the seminars, Norm presented several of them himself. His knowledge and experience coupled with his immense enthusiasm for Fly Fishing make Norm Crisp an exceptional asset of the Heart of America Fly Fishers, the Southern Council and the FFF. His generosity in sharing his knowledge bears witness to his dedication to the first of the FFF purposes – Education.
