2007 FFF Southern Council Nomination

Fly Tyer of the Year

Richard Dover

Our nomination for the Fly Tyer of the Year is Richard Dover.

Richard is a member of Mid South Fly Fishers and the Federation of Fly Fishers. He is both an avid fly fisherman and fly tyer. He has previously been recognized as MSFF Club Tyer of the Year.

As many of us, Richard got his start in fly fishing only a few years back. Somewhere though he became obsessed with the art of fly tying. Richard is all that could be asked for in an individual who deserves recognition of for his fly typing talent and contributions of giving to others a love for fly tying.

Richard, as a fly tyer, is a student, artist, and an excellent instructor in passing on what he has learned.

From the time Richard started tying, he has collected old and new fly tying books and magazines then learned how to duplicate and tie the flys offered in their contents. He has attended numerous Sowbug festivals and SOC Conclaves as a student and demonstrator of his fly tying abilities.

Richard is retired and finds himself spending extended periods camping on the Little Red River each year where he applies his artist mode devising new flys through invention or adaptation. He follows with on the stream experimentation and application. His efforts develop into several months of fish tales and fly tying demonstration for our club meetings and outings.

That propeller headed Wooley-Booger is still a popular subject!

Richard does not let his interest for fly tying end there. He is generous with his volunteer time: being there to help when MSFF sponsors outings; helping enlist new club members; and tying flys for MSFF’s charity and fund raising fly boxes.

As a teacher, Richard accepted the job of representing our club as fly tying instructor for the Bass Pro Shop’s once a month fly tying class. Here he handles a class of one to eighteen tyers with experience running from zero to a year or more.

When called upon prior to our monthly club meetings Richard will, without hesitation, demonstrates fly tying. He always has a large selection of the flys he has tied with him and will sit down and help anyone learn to tie them.

Through Richard’s fly tying contributions to our club and the Southern Council, we feel he deserves the honor of Fly Tyer of the Year.
