2007 FFF Southern Council Nomination

Fly Tyer of the Year

Dr. Gary Woodward

I would like to nominate Dr. Gary Woodward for fly tyer of the Year. Gary is always willing to share his knowledge with those interested in fly tying.

Gary has been a fly tying coach at the Southern Council Conclave several times. He has presented fly tying programs and demonstrations for our local club, at the Northeast Arkansas Flyfishers Fly Tyers’ Roundtable, and with scouting groups. He has tied flies for various charities, such as Casting for Recovery and the American Cancer Society.

Gary came to Jonesboro from Canada and has adapted to American fly tying traditions, while keeping his Canadian style and tradition. He can tie a woolly bugger to fish on the White and then go in to tying a salmon or steelhead fly without skipping a beat. Last year, Gary won the Southern Council’s competition for the Grey Ghost streamer to go in the new Southern Council’s logo.

Gary tying is a joy to watch. The knowledge and expertise that he brings to tying is amazing. I hope that you will consider Gary’s recommendation for fly tyer of the Year with the same enthusiasm that I’ve had in watching Gary tie.

Respectfully,

Dennis Reed
Southern Council Conclave Fly Tying Chair
