2008 FFF Southern Council Nomination

Federator of the Year

Kurt Moomau

It’s with great appreciation that I present for your consideration the nomination of Kurt Moomau for Federation of Fly Fishers Southern Council Federator of the Year for 2008.

Kurt is a member of Free State Fly Fishers, a Northeast Kansas FFF Charter Club where he serves on the board as Education Vice President. His leadership has played a large part in the growth of his local club.

Kurt has been a major contributor to the FFF Southern Council at both the local and regional levels. In 2007, he served as the Southern Council Conclave Chair and in 2008 is the Conclave Programs Chair.

At the club level he has personally recruited 21 new Federation members in the past year in addition to leading his club’s educational efforts. He has represented the FFF in teaching fly casting and tying at Cabela’s, The Topeka Boat and Outdoor Show and the local kids fishing club.

In early 2008 Kurt formed a long-term partnership with Topeka, KS Seaman High School that will have members of Free State Fly Fishers teaching the fly fishing and fly tying elements of their newly launched outdoors education program. In the spring 2008 pilot 15 kids learned how to cast and fish numerous flies that they had tied. This has been expanded for the upcoming school year where 60-70 students will be enrolled in these classes for credit.

Kurt’s promotion of fly fishing has had an extremely positive effect on the growth of the sport and FFF membership in Northeast Kansas. I admire his enthusiasm for helping others and am proud to have him as a friend.
