2008 FFF Southern Council NominationFly Tyer of the YearJohn MadduxI would like to nominate one our our club member, John Maddux, of Jack Sparks Central Texas Fly Rodders as fly tyer of the year. John tied last year at the conclave in Arkansas, I believehe was tying his han painted foam poppers, which were a big hit with some of the local smallmouth guides. His poppers are beautiful to look at, but I can attest that they also catch somebig largemouth. Not only does he tie those poppers, but he ties everything, dow to a size 32 midge he uses on the San Juan. John has worked through our club to oranize monthly fly tying sessions at a local sporting goods store, that is open to the public for instructional purpose. He worked a year ago to organize our club's participation in a fly tying booth at the Legacy Outfitter's outdoor show here in Waco, which was attended by quite a few folks. He also put on casting demonstrations for the kids while there. Legacy is a Christian outdoorsman group here in Waco. He has recently organized a fly donation for a raffle to benefit the the Cameron Park Zoo here in Waco, as well as for the local Coastal Conservation Association chapter. He's always quick to give tying advice or materials to anyone interested in getting started or just tying a new pattern. While he is not well know in fly tying circles, except around Waco, John's flies are well tied and catch fish. It is not just his flies though, that would make him worthy of this award, it is his efforts at teaching fly tying and fishing to anyone interested. Pat Vanek |
