The FFF Ralph Moon Fund

A bright light in the world of fly fishing was extinguished Wednesday, January 26, 2011 when Ralph W. Moon crossed the creek and entered fly fishing heaven. He was 85 years old. A passionate river conservationist, master cane rod maker, award winning fly tyer, expert fly fisherman, outdoor writer, and a great friend, Ralph Moon passed away at his home on the banks of the Henry's Fork of the Snake River, near St. Anthony, ID.

Past FFF President Al Wilkie reports that during his administration as president of the FFF, he asked the Southern Council of the FFF for a grant of $5,000.00 to fund a new Educational Trust Fund. The SOC approved and funded the $5,000.00 grant. The FFF's Excom approved the creation of the fund during its December, 1987 meeting which was ratified by the Board of Directors in 1988. The fund was named "The Ralph Moon Fund" and its intent was to fund FFF educational materials. The original fund was transferred to the Foundation in the mid 1990's along with some additional donations. Since 1998 the FFF Foundation in combination with other funds has distributed almost $5,000 to support the educational projects of the FFF Discovery Center.

FFF Foundation President Earl Rettig reports that the Ralph Moon Fund is still held in the FFF Foundation with current assets of $22,616.57 as of 12/31/10. Included in this amount is some $1,500 in earned income that was available for distribution. Retaining all assets in perpetual accounts and only using earned income for beneficial uses is the best way to establish memorials. Additional donations to the Ralph Moon Fund will increase the assets of the fund, allow more project sponsorship, and be a further memorial to this great man.

Donations should be made payable to the FFF Foundation, Inc. For better tracking please send all such special donations to:

Education Reports

For the those clubs or individuals who may be ignorant (uninformed) regarding Education Reports and what it is for, it is a database for collecting details of the education activities that a club or individual is providing for their local area. By inputtting your local information, the data can be shared on a club-, state-, region-, or council-wide basis. When data is not added, it presents a problem for reporting Southern Council activities. If little or no data goes in, inadequate data comes out. We know that education efforts are being made in the Southern Council. We just want your help documenting those efforts.

If you are an educator, please take time to establish a log-in and then utilize the Education Reports' features to tell what your club or you as an individual have been doing to educate others. Every opportunity that is spent with students of any age are important to document. By documenting edcuation activities, the Southern Council can use the data to support or promote with vendors the influence it has in the fly fishing world. It is important to record any effort, no matter how small or how large it is.

Wayne E & Catherine Moore Youth Fund

I would like to be sure that all clubs are aware of the Wayne E. Moore memorial funds that are available for youth days. I never met Mr. Moore, but I am told that he was an avid fly fisherman, a long-standing member of the Southern Council, and a person who was deeply interested in youngsters. When this gentleman died, he left a legacy to the Southern Council with the funds to be used to defray the costs of clubs conducting Youth Days or Youth Outings. To qualify for these funds, a club must designate the youth day or outing as a Wayne E. & Catherine Moore Youth Day.

Wayne E & Catherine Moore Youth Fund, Application, MS Word format

It would be appropriate to advertise the youth day in your club newsletter as a Wayne E. & Catherine Moore Youth Day, and, at some point during the day or outing, briefly discuss who Wayne E. Moore was and that the funds were supplied as a result of his concern and generosity. These funds have traditionally been used to buy hot-dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks, etc., for the Youth Day. If your club is interested in conducting a Wayne E & Catherine Moore Youth Day, please supply me with a brief letter outlining what your plans are, and designate how much money you are requesting, and how it will be spent.
