Outreach

Mission Statement

Southern Council Outreach Committee supports the Federation of Fly Fishers Southern Council by providing an opportunity for the fly fisher to include friends and family that are non-fly fishers or novice fly fishers. Southern Council Outreach Committee offers events and activities to meet the needs and peak the interest of these individuals and supplies an outlet to join the fly fisher at the annual Southern Council Conclave.

Conclave 2007

It seems like each year the conclave just gets better and better. I hope that this year is no exception where Outreach is concerned. We have many things going on and it is my hope that there is something offered that you have an interest in. It won't be long after the 2007 Conclave is over that planning for 2008 will start, and I welcome your suggestions.

The luncheon this year did not have a host club, but what we do have is several women who stepped up when asked and have helped get this organized! The Republican Ladies will be featuring their awesome menu as they have in the past and the keynote speaker will be Julie Meissner from Stanley, Idaho. She is the owner/operator of Sawtooth Fishing Guides. After lunch there will be an auction raffle that is always a lot of fun. Space is limited so reserve your spot and get registered!!!

This year our programs will begin on Thursday with Julie's "On the Water" seminar. Julie has been working on the rivers and in the mountains of Idaho guiding clients fishing, skiing, backpacking, and rafting for nearly 25 years. She grew up in the mountains of Oregon, fishing and hiking in the summers and ski racing in the winters before moving to the Sawtooth Mountain, Salmon River area of Idaho. You'll spend the day with Julie on the White River learning trout tactics.

Friday and Saturday have a lot of things happening. Julie will hold two casting sessions, one on Friday morning and one on Saturday morning. Then on Friday afternoon she will take you through a slide show tour of Fishing the Seasons in Idaho.

We also have a fly tying class with Terry & Roxanne Wilson and you'll need a little experience for this class and please bring your vice & tools.

Dennis Slane will be cooking for us on Saturday morning with his Dutch Ovens and helper Joe Yoker — you'll eat what you cook.

Renee O'Dell will have a basic beading class where you'll make a bracelet or necklace "your choice" and the best thing is — no experience is necessary!

Patti Hummert and Diane Ellis will also have a presentation on Casting For Recovery and what this retreat encompasses for the women who attend. A very worthy cause.

Duane Hada will be conducting a Watercolor Workshop at the springhouse in Cotter and if you've not seen his work, it's fabulous!!!

For those that paint, this is for you. And Steve Jensen will do a Fly Plate Construction workshop. This is an abbreviated version - a demonstration - of what he does at the National Conclave and he does superb work. A must class if you've ever wanted to build a fly plate.

Most all of these programs are free, but not all, but most importantly, find something you like and have some fun!

Activities and Events

The Committee host activities and events at the SOC Conclave that are in keeping with its mission statement. Activities and events include:

Outreach Luncheon: held during the SOC Conclave, traditionally mid-day Saturday. This is the Committees primary fund-raising opportunity (see "Fund-Raising and Charitable Giving" below). Fishing Clubs affiliated with SOC take turns hosting this event (see Outreach Luncheon Checklist [MS Excel]).

Outreach Inlet: a booth staffed by Outreach participants during the 2-day SOC Conclave to create an awareness of the Outreach Committee and encourage our target audience to participate, The Outreach Inlet occupies a vendor space and like a vendor must compensate the SOC Conclave for booth space. (see "Fund-Raising and Charitable Giving" below)

Outreach Programs: The Outreach Chair is responsible for programs at the Annual SOC Conclave. Programs are open to all SOC Conclave participants and traditionally include:

  • Outreach Keynote: A notable fly fisher or personality selected for their appeal to the Outreach membership and/or area of expertise.
  • Clinics:
    • Fly Casting – often presented by the Outreach Keynote and/or other instructors (FFF Certified Casting Instructors are preferred)
    • Fly Tying – presented by notable tyers that appeals to the Outreach membership and display a high level of expertise in the art of fly tying.
    • Other subjects of appeal to the Outreach membership that may or may not be related to Fly Fishing, i.e. quilting, scrapbooking, cooking, rod building, framing and matting, fly plate assembly, etc…
  • Programs:
    • Keynote Presentation: usually a slide show (or other media) addressing fly fishing or a related topic. This presentation occurs during the SOC Conclave and there may be one or more Keynote Presentations.
    • Slide shows (or other media) presentations that can address fly fishing or a related topic or a non-fishing topic. Photography, first aid, writing, etc…

Fund Raising and Charitable Giving

The Committee is self-sustaining and does not receive funds from the SOC to support is goals, activities or events. The Committee raises funds primarily by a raffle and live auction held during the Outreach Luncheon. Items are donated by the membership and outside vendors. The host club is responsible for organizing the raffle and auction and is encouraged to seek assistance from the Auctioneer regarding the items to be included in the live auction (see Outreach Luncheon Checklist [MS Excel]).

Other Fund Raising opportunities include:

  • Booth Raffle at the Outreach Inlet with the proceeds used to cover the cost of the booth
  • Other Fund Raisers – i.e. Outreach Cookbook, etc.

It is important to recognize the limitations of an annual fund raising event and all requests for charitable giving need to be presented at the Outreach business meeting. Whenever possible checks for charitable giving will be presented at the SOC Conclave Dinner Saturday Night to a representative of the selected organization or cause. If no one from the organization or cause is able to attend the SOC Conclave Dinner the donation will be announced and check mailed.
